The Just Energy Transition Center (JETC) hosted a series of webinars exploring the consequences of fossil plant closures in Arizona and potential support mechanisms for impacted communities.The first webinar, "Defining the Challenge," examined the economic impacts of coal plant closures in Northern Arizona.

  • Jeremy Calles, True Professionals LLC: Discussed the financial impact of coal plant closures on school districts.
  • Gregg Martinez, Economic Development Coordinator, City of Page: Covered the financial and social impacts on the town of Page, AZ.
  • Julia Haggarty, Associate Professor, Montana State University: Explored rural resilience and strategies for managing the transition away from coal.

The second webinar, "Securing Transition Support from Utilities and States," held on September 3, 2024, explored examples of funding and technical assistance from utilities and state governments.

  • Nathan Schott, Attorney, Gust Rosenfeld P.L.C.: Shared his experience representing Joseph City School District in APS’ rate case.
  • Terri Livermore, Policy and Engagement Manager, Colorado Office of Just Transition: CO's actions to support communities impacted by coal plant closures.
  • Shane Zahrt, Senior Attorney and Lobbyist, Flaherty & Hood, P.A.: Discussed his experience securing state funding to aid coal communities.

The final webinar, "Tapping Federal Resources for Economic Development," occurred on September 10, 2024, summarizing federal resources available to coal communities and strategies for accessing these funds.

  • Kevin Dale John, Los Alamos National Laboratory: Shared insights from his leadership of the Interagency Working Group Rapid Response Team.
  • Chris Pasterz, Executive Director, REAL AZ: Presented on leveraging economic development opportunities in rural Arizona.
  • Jenna Rowell, Director of Rural Development, Local First Arizona: Discussed connecting rural communities with resources to foster economic resilience.
  • Dru (Bower) Palmer, Grants Integration Manager for Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon: Provided insights on managing federal grants and supporting communities in Wyoming.

ASU through the Julie Ann Wrigley Global Futures Laboratory and the School of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies is proud to partner with the American Resilience Project and filmmaker Roger Sorkin on the film Current Revolution: Nation In Transition. This documentary takes an importance look at how the southwest is transitioning away from fossil fuel-based energy plants and the impact their operation and their closure have on Native lands, specifically the Navajo Nation.
